Nuclear households are identified using the IPUMS HHTYPE variable, which describes the composition of households and roughly follows the classification system recommended by the UN Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses (Revision 2): Link. Nuclear households are those classified as Married or cohabiting couple, no children, Married or cohabiting couple, with children (HHTYPE = 3), or Lone parent family in the HHTYPE variable. This indicator is calculated for private households only. Meaningful household composition information is not available for group quarters such as institutions and other collective dwellings; all group quarters are classified together in the "group quarters" category of HHTYPE. For this reason, group quarters are excluded from both numerator and denominator of this indicator. Group quarters are identified using the IPUMS GQ variable: Link.

Expected Frequency of Data Dissemination
Annual

Geospatial Dimension Availability
Country (geolev0), Sub-national level 1 (geolev1), Sub-national level 2 (geolev2)

Time Dimension Availability
1960, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017

Disaggregation Dimension Availability
Place of residence: Rural, Urban

Comments
IPUMS: Individuals are not organized into households in the following samples, which are excluded from this indicator: Canada 1971, 1981, 1991, 2001, Chile 1960, Colombia 1964, Costa Rica 1963, Dominican Republic 1960, 1970, Ecuador 1962, Germany 1970, Honduras 1961, Kenya 1979, Liberia 1974, Mexico 1960, Netherlands 1960, 1971, 2001, 2011, Pakistan 1981, Spain 1981, and United Kingdom 2001.
