IPUMS:
The sum of couple-only households, couple-with-children households, and lone-parent households, divided by total number of private households. Nuclear households are identified using the IPUMS HHTYPE variable, which describes the composition of households and roughly follows the classification system recommended by the UN Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses (Revision 2): Link. Nuclear households are those classified as Married or cohabiting couple, no children, Married or cohabiting couple, with children (HHTYPE = 3), or Lone parent family in the HHTYPE variable. This indicator is calculated for private households only. Meaningful household composition information is not available for group quarters such as institutions and other collective dwellings; all group quarters are classified together in the "group quarters" category of HHTYPE. For this reason, group quarters are excluded from both numerator and denominator of this indicator. Group quarters are identified using the IPUMS GQ variable: Link.
