Household heads are identified using the IPUMS RELATE variable which corresponds to the census question that asks respondents their relationship to the head of the household. The definition of head of household varies across censuses, but typically refers to the person who is recognized as the head of the household by the other members of the household. For this indicator, household heads are those classified as such in the RELATE variable. Individuals age 70-79 are identified using the IPUMS AGE variable. This indicator is calculated for private households only. Meaningful relationship-to-head information is not available for group quarters such as institutions and other collective dwellings; in most samples, all persons in group quarters are classified as non-relative or unknown in RELATE. For this reason, group quarters are excluded from both numerator and denominator of this indicator. Group quarters are identified using the IPUMS GQ variable: Link.

Expected Frequency of Data Dissemination
Annual

Geospatial Dimension Availability
Country (geolev0), Sub-national level 1 (geolev1), Sub-national level 2 (geolev2)

Time Dimension Availability
1960, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017

Disaggregation Dimension Availability
Age group: 70 to 79 years old
Place of residence: Rural, Urban

Comments
IPUMS: Age is topcoded at 75+ in the following samples, which are excluded from this indicator: Honduras 1961, Italy 2011, and Netherlands 1960.
