Full Name
Percentage of households that are extended
Domain
Population
Sub-domain
Household structure
Definition
Percentage of households that with a family nucleus and other persons related to the head of household.
Method of Calculation
Data source specific method of calculation:
IPUMS:
The sum of households with a family nucleus and other persons related to the head of household, divided by total number of private households. Extended households are identified using the IPUMS HHTYPE variable, which describes the composition of households and roughly follows the classification system recommended by the UN Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses (Revision 2): Link. Extended households are those classified as such in the HHTYPE variable. This indicator is calculated for private households only. Meaningful household composition information is not available for group quarters such as institutions and other collective dwellings; all group quarters are classified together in the "group quarters" category of HHTYPE. For this reason, group quarters are excluded from both numerator and denominator of this indicator. Group quarters are identified using the IPUMS GQ variable: Link.
