Method of Calculation

Data source specific method of calculation:

DHS:

Numerator:
Number of people who were legally or formally married or started living in a consensual union at single year of age categories. Women who have never been married or lived in a consensual union are included in a separate category at the tail of the distribution. In ever-married samples, the all women factor is tallied in the category of women who have never been married or lived in a consensual union.
Denominator:
Number of people of all marital statuses. Numerators are divided by the overall denominator and multiplied by 100 to obtain percentages. In ever-married samples, the denominator is adjusted by the all women factors.
Calculation:
Medians are calculated from cumulated single-year percent distributions of age at first marriage or consensual union. Median is linearly interpolated between the single-year percent distributions that occur at the ages before and after 50 percent of the women had married for the first time or begun living in a consensual union.
IPUMS:
Age at marriage is determined using the IPUMS AGEMARR variable, which indicates age at first marriage or consensual union. Samples vary in treatment of consensual unions. The median is calculated from cumulated single-year percentage distributions of age at first marriage or union. Median is linearly interpolated between single-year percentage distributions that occur at ages before and after 50 percent of persons had married or entered a union for the first time. Persons who have never married are included in a separate category at the tail of the distribution. For some sub-populations such as young cohorts, there is no median because less than 50 percent of persons have married. The indicator is assigned the value 99 where there is no median.
