Fertility
Definition
Number of births to women in a particular five-year age group, divided by the number of women in that age.
Method of Calculation
Data source specific method of calculation:
DHS:
The age-specific fertility rate is calculated as the quotient of the numerator divided by the denominator for each age group, multiplied by 1000. The result is an average rate over the 36-month period, expressed as an annual rate per 1000 women.
IPUMS:
The number of births occuring during 12 months preceding the census per 1,000 women age 15 to 49 classified in five-year age groups. Where available, births during the 12 months preceding the census are identified using the IPUMS BIRTHSLYR variable which corresponds to the census question asking women the number of live births during the last year: Link. For censuses that do not include BIRTHSLYR but do include variables indicating month of last birth (LASTBMO: Link and year of last birth (LASTBYR: Link) births during the 12 months preceding the census are identified by summing births occuring in the twelve months preceding the month of enumeration. A census month variable (CENSUSMO) is constructed for the purposes of this indicator and will soon be available from IPUMS.

Comments
DHS: A three-year (36 month) time period is taken for calculating current age-specific fertility rate (AFSR). This period is a compromise between the need for recency and reduction of sampling variation. This time period was selected during
the World Fertility Survey, when sample sizes were on average about 5,000 women. For comparability over time and across surveys, this period has been maintained by The DHS Program.
IPUMS: The Jamaica 1982, Jamaica 1991, Saint Lucia 1980, and Saint Lucia 1991 censuses do not provide fertility information for women attending school full-time. Indicator values have been calculated for these censuses but caution should be used in cross-national comparisons involving these samples. The following censuses collected fertility information for ever-married women only: Iran 2006, Iran 2011, Iraq 1997, Morocco 1982, Morocco 1994, Morocco 2004, Nepal 2001, Nepal 2011, Palestine 1997, Palestine 2007, Philippines 1990, Sudan 2008, Thailand 2000, Turkey 1985. Never-married women are assumed to have 0 live births in these samples except in Nepal 2001, Nepal 2011, Thailand 2000, and Turkey 1985 where never-married women are excluded from fertility indicators.
