description:
Short Name
Demand for family planning satisfied, sexually active unmarried women

Full Name
Proportion of sexually active unmarried women aged 15 to 49 who have their need for family planning satisfied

Domain
Family planning

Sub-domain
Demand satisfied

Definition
Percentage of sexually active unmarried women aged 15 to 49 with total demand for family planning that is satisfied by contraceptive methods.

Method of Calculation
The numerator is the number of sexually active unmarried women of reproductive age (15-49 years old) who are currently using, or whose partner is currently using, at least one contraceptive method. The denominator is the total demand for family planning (the sum of the number of sexually active unmarried women using any contraceptive method and the number of sexually active unmarried women with unmet need for family planning). The quotient is then multiplied by 100 to arrive at the percentage of sexually active unmarried women (aged 15 to 49 years years) who have their need for family planning satisfied with contraceptive methods.
Data source specific method of calculation:

Global database:
A Bayesian hierarchical model was used to estimate and project contraceptive prevalence and the unmet need for family planning among women aged 15 to 49 years years. The model allows an assessment of uncertainty in the estimates based on the availability and quality of input data: they allow for greater precision in cases where more and better data is available and indicate the degree of uncertainty in situations where which the data are insufficient or are from sources more susceptible to systematic differences as captured by the biases assigned to each survey-based data point.
Estimates are based on all unmarried or not in union women aged 15 to 49 years.
DHS:

Numerator:
Number of sexually active unmarried women aged 15 to 49 years who are using any contraceptive method.
Denominator:
All sexually active unmarried women aged 15 to 49 years, including women who are not currently married or in a consensual union (single, divorced, widowed, and separated) and who had sexual intercourse within the last 30 days, that have either unmet need for family planning or met need for family planning.
Calculation:
Numerator divided by the denominator, multiplied by 100.

Expected Frequency of Data Dissemination
Annual

Geospatial Dimension Availability
Country (geolev0), Sub-national level 1 (geolev1)

Time Dimension Availability
1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020

Disaggregation Dimension Availability
Age group: 15 to 19 years old, 15 to 24 years old, 15 to 49 years old, 20 to 24 years old, 20 to 29 years old, 25 to 29 years old, 25 to 34 years old, 30 to 34 years old, 30 to 39 years old, 35 to 39 years old, 35 to 49 years old, 40 to 44 years old, 40 to 49 years old, 45 to 49 years old
Education level: Higher, No education, No education or primary education, Primary education, Secondary education, Secondary education or higher
Place of residence: Rural, Urban
Sex: Female
Wealth index: Middle, Poorer, Poorest, Richer, Richest

References
Contraceptive Use 2022 and Estimates and Projections of Family Planning Indicators 2022 Methodology Report: Link
