Full Name
Adolescent birth rate (per 1,000 women aged 15-19 and 10-14 years)
Domain

Sub-domain
Maternal and newborn health

Definition
Annual number of births to females aged 10-14 or 15-19 years per 1,000 females in the respective age group.
Method of Calculation
The adolescent birth rate is computed as a ratio. The numerator is the number of live births to women aged 15 to 19 years, and the denominator an estimate of exposure to childbearing by women aged 15 to 19 years. The computation is the same for the age group 10-14 years. The numerator and the denominator are calculated differently for civil registration, survey and census data.
Computation formula:
Adolescent Birth Rate (15-19) = (number of births to women ages 15-19/mid-year population of women ages 15-19) * 1,000
In the case of civil registration data, the numerator is the registered number of live births born to women aged 15 to 19 years during a given year, and the denominator is the estimated or enumerated population of women aged 15 to 19 years.
Data source specific method of calculation:
DHS:
The age-specific fertility rate is calculated as the quotient of the numerator divided by the denominator for each age group, multiplied by 1000. The result is an average rate over the 36-month period, expressed as an annual rate per 1000 women.
IPUMS:
The number of births occuring during 12 months preceding the census per 1,000 women aged 15 to 19 years classified in five-year age groups. Where available, births during the 12 months preceding the census are identified using the IPUMS BIRTHSLYR variable which corresponds to the census question asking women the number of live births during the last year: Link. For censuses that do not include BIRTHSLYR but do include variables indicating month of last birth (LASTBMO: Link and year of last birth (LASTBYR: Link) births during the 12 months preceding the census are identified by summing births occuring in the twelve months preceding the month of enumeration. A census month variable (CENSUSMO) is constructed for the purposes of this indicator and will soon be available from IPUMS.
