Full Name
Percentage of population age 5-29 out of school
Domain
Education
Sub-domain
School attendance
Definition
Percentage of population aged 5-29 out of school.
Method of Calculation
Data source specific method of calculation:
IPUMS:
The number of persons age 5 to 29 not attending school at the time of the census divided by the total number of persons age 5 to 29. School attendance is determined using the IPUMS SCHOOL variable, which indicates if the individual was attending school at the time of the census or within some specified period of time prior to the census. For most samples, school attendance was determined as of the time of the census; some censuses consider attendance any time in the previous year to be an affirmative response. In all countries the nature of the inquiry on school attendance aims primarily at identifying those persons attending schools with a normal program of study leading ultimately to a succession of grades or levels. There are differences, however, in the inclusion of correspondence courses, adult literacy classes, and similar non-traditional studies. Many censuses ask about school attendance starting at age 6 or 7, reflecting the official minimum primary school age for the country.
