Full Name

Domain

Definition
Median difference in years of age between spouses/consensual partners

Method of Calculation

Data source specific method of calculation:

IPUMS:
Median difference in years of age between spouses/consensual partners, with the difference calculated as the male partner's age minus the female partner's age. Positive values thus indicate that male partners are more often older than their female partners. The median is calculated from cumulated single-year percentage distributions of age difference between spouses. Median is linearly interpolated between single-year percentage distributions that occur at age differences before and after 50 percent of the distribution. Age difference between spouses is calculated using the IPUMS attach characteristics feature which allows data users to attach to each person record in a data extract variables that describe other household members. Age of spouse is available on the person record for every married person with a co-resident spouse. The attach characteristics feature uses IPUMS family interrelationship pointer variables.
