Service Description: Short Name
Percentage of households with a flush toilet
Full Name
Percentage of households with a flush toilet
Domain
Population
Sub-domain
Household characteristics
Definition
Percentage of households with a flush toilet.
Method of Calculation
Data source specific method of calculation:
IPUMS:
The number of private households with access to a flush toilet divided by the total number of private households. Access to a flush toilet is determined using the IPUMS TOILET variable. In all samples, connection to a sewer or septic tank is interpreted as access to a flush toilet. The TOILET variable does not require that the household had exclusive access to the toilet facilities unless noted in the country comparability section. They are shared in some samples, and in other samples the exclusivity is ambiguous. This indicator is calculated for private households only. Toilet type is not reported for group quarters such as institutions and other collective dwellings for most censuses. For this reason, group quarters are excluded from both numerator and denominator of this indicator. Group quarters are identified using the IPUMS GQ variable: Link.

Comments
IPUMS: Individuals are not organized into households in the following samples: Canada 1971, Chile 1960, Costa Rica 1963, Ecuador 1962, Honduras 1961. These samples are included for this indicator, but because these are samples of individuals rather than households, the indicator values may not be fully comparable to those from household samples. Indicator values for the following samples, which have substantial numbers of cases with toilets of unknown type, should be interpreted with caution: Botswana 1981, 2001, Cameroon 2005, Ethiopia 1994, and Indonesia 1990, 1995, 2005.
