Access to electricity is determined using the IPUMS ELECTRIC variable. Some censuses ask directly about access to electricity or for information on source of electricity or electricity provider. In many samples, access to electricity is inferred from a question on source of lighting. ELECTRIC assumes that if a household has access to electricity, it will be used for lighting. This indicator is calculated for private households only. Access to electricity is not reported for group quarters such as institutions and other collective dwellings for most censuses. For this reason, group quarters are excluded from both numerator and denominator of this indicator. Group quarters are identified using the IPUMS GQ variable: Link.

Expected Frequency of Data Dissemination
Annual

Geospatial Dimension Availability
Country (geolev0), Sub-national level 1 (geolev1), Sub-national level 2 (geolev2)

Time Dimension Availability
1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016

Disaggregation Dimension Availability
Place of residence: Rural, Urban

Comments
IPUMS: Individuals are not organized into households in the following samples: Chile 1960, Costa Rica 1963, Ecuador 1962, Honduras 1961. These samples are included for this indicator, but because these are samples of individuals rather than households, the indicator values may not be fully comparable to those from household samples.
