Literate persons are identified using the IPUMS LIT variable. Censuses provide differing criteria with respect to the level of ability that should constitute literacy. These differences are generally evident in the varying wording of the instructions to the census enumerators. Typically, the instructions appear to be aimed at distinguishing persons who have memorized how to write their signature or recognize certain words from those that can truly write and comprehend text they read. Some samples identify "semi-literate" persons who can read but cannot write in the unharmonized source variables. In all samples those persons are considered illiterate in LIT.

Expected Frequency of Data Dissemination
Annual

Geospatial Dimension Availability
Country (geolev0), Sub-national level 1 (geolev1), Sub-national level 2 (geolev2)

Time Dimension Availability
1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017

Disaggregation Dimension Availability
Age group: 65 years old and over
Nativity: Foreign-born, Native-born
Place of residence: Rural, Urban
Race: Afro-Ecuadorian, Asian, Black, Brown (Brazil), Chinese, Indian, Indigenous, Mestizo (Indigenous and White), Mixed race, Montubio (Ecuador), Mulatto (Black and White), Other, Two or more races, White
Sex: Female, Male
