Method of Calculation

Data source specific method of calculation:

IPUMS:
The number of persons age 80 and older that reside in a private household with at least one of their children, divided by the total number of persons age 80 or older living in private households. Co-residence with a child is determined using the IPUMS NCHILD variable, which indicates the number of own children in the household. NCHILD counts the number of children linked to the person via the constructed IPUMS pointer variables MOMLOC or POPLOC -- mother's and father's location in the household. This indicator is calculated for private households only; group quarters such as institutions and other group living arrangements are excluded from both numerator and denominator. Group quarters are identified using the IPUMS GQ variable: Link.

Comments
IPUMS: Individuals are not organized into households in the following samples, which are excluded from this indicator: Canada 1971, 1981, 1991, 2001, Chile 1960, Colombia 1964, Costa Rica 1963, Dominican Republic 1960, 1970, Ecuador 1962, Germany 1970, Honduras 1961, Kenya 1979, Liberia 1974, Mexico 1960, Netherlands 1960, 1971, 2001, 2011, Pakistan 1981, Spain 1981, and United Kingdom 2001. Family interrelationship variables are not available in the samples previously listed as well as these samples, which are excluded from this indicator: Argentina 2010, Austria 2011, Ghana 1984, Poland 2011, Trinidad and Tobago 1990, and Ukraine 2001. Spain 2011 includes empirical parental pointers, but does not include a variable for relationship to household head, such that IPUMS was unable to create MOMLOC, POPLOC, STEPPOP, and STEPMOM variables with the standard algorithm. Instead, MOMLOC and POPLOC correspond to the empirical parental pointers. Age is topcoded at 75+ in the following samples, which are excluded from this indicator: Honduras 1961, Italy 2011, and Netherlands 1960.
