Individuals under age 18 are identified using the IPUMS AGE variable. Mortality status of father is identified using the IPUMS MORTFAT variable, which indicates whether the person's biological father was still living at the time of the census: <a href="https://international.ipums.org/international-action/variables/MORTFAT#codes_section">Link</a>. Co-residence with father is determined using the IPUMS POPLOC variable, which is an IPUMS-constructed variables indicating whether or not the person's father lived in the same household at the time of the census: <a href="https://international.ipums.org/international-action/variables/POPLOC#codes_section">Link</a>.
