Method of Calculation

Data source specific method of calculation:

IPUMS:
The number of children under age 18 with living fathers that reside in the same household with their father, divided by the total number of children under age 18 with living fathers. Individuals under age 18 are identified using the IPUMS AGE variable. Mortality status of father is identified using the IPUMS MORTFAT variable, which indicates whether the person's biological father was still living at the time of the census: Link. Co-residence with father is determined using the IPUMS POPLOC variable, which is an IPUMS-constructed variables indicating whether or not the person's father lived in the same household at the time of the census: Link. The POPLOC variable identifies social relationships such as stepfather and adoptive father as well as biological relationships.
