The numerator is the number of married or in union women of reproductive age (15-49 years old) who are currently using, or whose partner is currently using, at least one modern contraceptive method. The denominator is the total demand for family planning (the sum of the number of married or in union women using any contraceptive method and the number of married or in union women with unmet need for family planning). The quotient is then multiplied by 100 to arrive at the percentage of married or in union women (aged 15 to 49 years years) who have their need for family planning satisfied with modern methods.

Data source specific method of calculation:

Global database:
A Bayesian hierarchical model was used to estimate and project contraceptive prevalence and the unmet need for family planning among women aged 15 to 49 years years. The model allows an assessment of uncertainty in the estimates based on the availability and quality of input data: they allow for greater precision in cases where more and better data is available and indicate the degree of uncertainty in situations where which the data are insufficient or are from sources more susceptible to systematic differences as captured by the biases assigned to each survey-based data point.

Estimates are based on all married or in union women aged 15 to 49 years.

Numerator:
Number of married or in union women aged 15 to 49 years who are using any modern contraceptive method including female sterilization, male sterilization, pill, IUD, injectables, implants, male condom, female condom, emergency contraception, vaginal methods, lactational amenorrhea method, or other modern methods.

Denominator:
Married or in union women aged 15 to 49 years that have either unmet need for family planning or met need for family planning.

Calculation:
Numerator divided by the denominator, multiplied by 100.
