Data source specific method of calculation:

IPUMS:
The sum of number of persons per room across all private households divided by the number of private households. Number of rooms per household is determined using the IPUMS ROOMS variable, which indicates the number of rooms occupied by the household. Most censuses define a "room" as an interior area or compartment of a dwelling defined by walls and a roof, excluding corridors or hallways, but including both sleeping and living areas. There are differences across censuses with regards to which rooms are included in the tally and which are excluded. Points of difference include: kitchens; bathrooms; garages; kitchens or bathrooms shared by multiple households; rooms used for various commercial or non-residential purposes; etc. In the ROOMS variable, the value 0 indicates that the household occupied only a part of room. For the purposes of indicator calculation, households reporting less than one room were considered to occupy 1 room. See Link for details. This indicator is calculated for private households only. Number of rooms is not reported for group quarters such as institutions and other collective dwellings for most censuses. For this reason, group quarters are excluded from both numerator and denominator of this indicator. Group quarters are identified using the IPUMS GQ variable: Link.
