Method of Calculation

Number of male births per 100 female births.

Data source specific method of calculation:

IPUMS:
The number of male births per number female births during the 12 months preceding the census, normalized to 100. Sex at birth is identified using the IPUMS LASTBSEX variable which indicates the sex of last birth. Births during the 12 months preceding the census are identified using the year of last birth, month of last birth, year of census, and month of census variables. In some cases, such as when the month of enumeration was unknown or the trend in birth rates indicated that not all births in the month preceding the month of enumeration were captured, the twelve month period was chosen based on examination of the data, with the goal of including the most recent twelve month period with complete birth data.
