IPUMS:
Calculated as proportion of females with at least secondary education completed divided by the proportion of males with at least secondary completed. A value less than one indicates disparity in favor of men or boys; a value greater than one indicates disparity in favor of women or girls. Highest level of education completed is measured using the IPUMS EDATTAIN variable. The EDATTAIN variable does not necessarily reflect any particular country's definition of the various levels of schooling in terms of terminology or the number of years of schooling. EDATTAIN is an attempt to merge -- into a single, roughly comparable variable -- samples that provide degrees, ones that provide actual years of schooling, and those that have some of both. The variable is largely comparable across census samples at the broadest levels of schooling--less than primary, primary, secondary, and tertiary. For more information, see Link.

IPUMS: Age is only available as grouped intervals for these samples: United Kingdom 2001; Israel 1972, 1995; Italy 2001; Palestine 1997, 2007; Slovenia 2002. In the AGE variable, data are coded to the mid-points of the intervals (rounding down). The interval for 15 to 19 years (16 to 19 for UK 2001) is coded as 17 in the AGE variable. Thus, this indicator describes persons age 20+ for these samples.
