Co-residence with a child is determined using the IPUMS NCHILD variable, which indicates the number of own children in the household. NCHILD counts the number of children linked to the person via the constructed IPUMS pointer variables MOMLOC or POPLOC -- mother's and father's location in the household. This indicator is calculated for private households only; group quarters such as institutions and other group living arrangements are excluded from both numerator and denominator. Spain 2011 includes empirical parental pointers, but does not include a variable for relationship to household head, such that IPUMS was unable to create MOMLOC, POPLOC, STEPPOP, and STEPMOM variables with the standard algorithm.
