IPUMS:<\/strong>
The sum of the number of children under age 18 per private household divided by the total number of private households. Individuals under age 18 are identified using the IPUMS AGE variable (AGE < 18): Link<\/a>. Unique households are identified by the IPUMS SERIAL variable, which is an identifying number unique to each household in a given sample: Link<\/a>. This indicator is calculated for private households only; group quarters such as institutions and other group living arrangements are excluded from both numerator and denominator. Private households are identified using the IPUMS GQ variable: Link<\/a>.
